Late Rally

U.S. stocks ended higher on Friday after waging a dramatic comeback in the final hour of trade.

The Dow saw three triple-digit full-day point moves this week.

For the week, the NYSE fell 1.47% while the NASDAQ slipped .29%.

Since January 27, 2010, when the NLX NYSE turned Bearish, the NYSE has declined 3.59%.  

Since January 22, 2010, when the NLX NASDAQ turned Bearish, the NASDAQ has declined 2.91%.

Global Concerns

Fears about the global economy hammered stocks on Thursday with a broad market sell-off fueled by grim employment numbers and financial worries in Europe.

Bernanke

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke survived hard-core opposition to his handling of the financial crisis by some Senate Republicans and Democrats and won approval on Thursday for a second four-year term.

Stocks had their worst month since February 2009.

For the week, the NYSE dropped 2.09% while the NASDAQ skidded 2.63%.

NLX NASDAQ Turns Bearish

Stocks closed with steep losses for a third straight day Friday, paced by technology shares, which suffered from analyst downgrades and concerns that Ben Bernanke might not get confirmed to a second term as Federal Reserve chairman. 

For the holiday shortened trading week, the NYSE tanked 4.43% while the NASDAQ slid 3.61%.

Since March 23, 2009, when the NLX NYSE turned Bullish, the NYSE has gained 38.35%.  

Since November 9, 2009, when the NLX NASDAQ turned Bullish, the NASDAQ has gained 2.38%.

Stocks suffered the worst one-day decline of 2010 so far, which slid after the announcement of weaker-than-expected revenue and a glum outlook in the financial sector.

U.S. markets are closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

For the week, the NYSE slipped .90% while the NASDAQ slid 1.26%.

January First Five Days

2010 started out strong as the NYSE jumped 3.31% while the NASDAQ climbed 2.21%.

The Bulls won the battle of the January First Five Days Early Warning System, chronicled by the editors of the Stock Trader's Almanac.  According to the Stock Trader's Almanac, the last 35 up First Five Days were followed by full-year gains 31 times for an 88.57% accuracy ratio.

Happy 2010

For the decade, the NYSE gained 4.49% while the NASDAQ plummeted 44.24%.

The Dow also sank 9.30% making it the 2nd worst performing decade ever. 

During the last week of 2009, the NYSE fell .97%  while the NASDAQ sank .72%.

Merry Christmas

As the countdown to 2010 begins and the end of the "lost decade", the S&P 500 is on track to post its first 10-year price drop since the 1930s.  The Nasdaq Composite ended the Christmas shortened trading week at its highest close since Sept. 3, 2008. 

For the week, the NYSE climbed 2.38% while the NASDAQ jumped 3.35%.

U.S. stocks closed higher Friday as better-than-expected earnings reports boosted investors' appetite for technology stocks.

For the week, the NYSE slipped .55% while the NASDAQ gained .98%.
